Plön Castle, located in the town of Plön in Schleswig-Holstein, is one of the largest castles in northern Germany and the only one situated on a hill. Built in the 17th century during the Thirty Years War as a residence for the Dukes of Schleswig-Holstein-Plön, the castle has undergone numerous transformations throughout its history. It served successively as a military cadet school and later as a boarding school before becoming a state possession. Financial constraints led Schleswig-Holstein to sell the castle in 2002 to the Fielmann Akademie Schloss Plön, which converted it into a training and qualification centre for optometry studies. After years of restricted public access, the new owners have selectively opened the castle to visitors.
