Perched atop a basalt hill overlooking the spa town of Braunfels in Hesse's Lahn-Dill-Kreis, Schloss Braunfels has served since the 13th century as the residence and governmental seat of the Counts and later Princes of Solms-Braunfels. The castle remains in family hands today, now stewarded by the Counts of Oppersdorff-Solms-Braunfels. Commanding the landscape and extending its visual presence deep into the Lahn Valley, it stands as a scenic counterpart to Schaumburg Castle downstream. During the 19th century, the castle underwent extensive remodeling in the Gothic Revival style, employing distinctive historicist forms that establish it as a notable example of Germany's romantic architectural movement of that era. Now designated a cultural heritage monument, the castle is open to the public and serves as a filming location.
