This stone lighthouse, standing 20 metres tall on the coastal peninsula of Ponta dos Capelinhos on Faial in the Azores, was constructed in 1894. Though now a former beacon, it has become an iconic symbol of the island, inextricably linked to the dramatic 1957–58 eruption of Capelinhos volcano that reshaped the landscape around it. Designated as cultural heritage, though without formal legal protection, the structure represents a significant historical landmark in Portugal's Atlantic archipelago.
