Built in 1868, the Poppenhusen Institute at 114-04 14th Road in College Point, Queens, is a five-story Victorian structure that holds the distinction of housing the first free kindergarten in the United States, as well as the nation's first free evening classes for adults. The stern Victorian design of the building reflects the civic aspirations of its era. Now operating as a community cultural center, the Institute was recognized for its historical significance when it was designated a New York City Landmark in 1970 and subsequently added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1977.
