Johns Hopkins Hospital, located at 600 North Broadway in Baltimore, is the teaching hospital and biomedical research facility of Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, incorporated in 1867 and opened in 1889. Designed in the Queen Anne style, the hospital was established through a philanthropic bequest of over $7 million by merchant, banker, and civic leader Johns Hopkins—then the largest bequest in American history. The institution is widely considered the founding center of modern American medicine, where numerous famed medical traditions originated, including rounds, residents, and house staff. Several major medical specialties were developed there, among them neurosurgery, cardiac surgery, and child psychiatry. The hospital, which includes the attached Johns Hopkins Children's Center serving patients aged 0–21, has been consistently ranked among the nation's top medical institutions and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
