Friends Hospital in Philadelphia is the oldest continuously operating private psychiatric institution in the United States, founded in 1813 by Quakers under the name The Asylum for the Relief of Persons Deprived of the Use of Their Reason and later renamed the Frankford Asylum for the Insane. Its campus, which dates to the institution's founding, exemplifies Second Empire and Colonial Revival architectural styles and has been designated a National Historic Landmark. Today the hospital remains accredited and licensed, continuing its original mission nearly two centuries after its establishment.
