The Brooklyn Museum is New York City's second-largest art institution, occupying a 560,000-square-foot Beaux-Arts building designed by McKim, Mead & White and completed in 1897. Situated near the Prospect Heights, Crown Heights, Flatbush, and Park Slope neighborhoods, the museum holds approximately 500,000 objects spanning antiquities, European, African, Oceanic, and Japanese art, with particular strength in Egyptian pieces spanning over 3,000 years. The collection emphasizes American art from the Colonial period onward, featuring works by Mark Rothko, Edward Hopper, Norman Rockwell, Georgia O'Keeffe, and Judy Chicago, among others. Originally founded in 1823 as the Brooklyn Apprentices' Library and merged with the Brooklyn Institute of Arts and Sciences in 1843, the museum underwent major renovations that revitalized the institution in the late twentieth century after years of struggle. The building itself is recognized as a New York City Landmark and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
