The Metropolitan Museum of Art, founded in 1870 on Manhattan's Upper East Side along the Museum Mile, is an encyclopedic institution housing approximately 1.5 million works across 17 curatorial departments. Designed by Jacob Wrey Mould, Calvert Vaux, McKim, Mead & White, and Richard Morris Hunt, the main building at 1000 Fifth Avenue—first constructed in 1880—spans approximately 2 million square feet, making it one of the world's largest art museums by area and the largest in the Americas. The collection spans from the ancient Near East and Egypt through contemporary works, encompassing paintings and sculptures by European Old Masters, extensive American and modern art, and significant holdings of African, Asian, Oceanian, Byzantine, and Islamic art, along with musical instruments, costumes, decorative arts, textiles, and weaponry. The museum operates additional locations including The Cloisters at Fort Tryon Park, devoted to medieval European art, and is set to absorb the Neue Galerie in 2028, expanding its early twentieth-century Austrian and German holdings.
