The Philadelphia Museum of Art is an art museum originally chartered in 1876 for the Centennial Exposition and completed in 1928 on Fairmount, a hilltop at the northwest terminus of the Benjamin Franklin Parkway. Designed by Horace Trumbauer, Zantzinger, Borie & Medary, Julian Abele, and Paul Philippe Cret, the main building blends Art Deco and Greek Revival styles. The museum houses more than 240,000 objects spanning European, American, and Asian art—including sculpture, paintings, prints, drawings, photographs, armor, and decorative arts. Its administered collection extends to the Rodin Museum and the Ruth and Raymond G. Perelman Building (opened 2007), which contains over 150,000 prints and drawings, 30,000 costume and textile pieces, and modern design objects. The museum also stewards the historic colonial houses Mount Pleasant and Cedar Grove in Fairmount Park. Owned by the City of Philadelphia and operated as a nonprofit, it annually hosts special and touring exhibitions.
