The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, the oldest art museum in Texas, was founded in 1917 and opened its first building to the public in 1924. Designed by Houston architect William Ward Watkin in the Greek Neoclassical style, the original structure was the first art museum building constructed in Texas. The museum's permanent collection spans more than 5,000 years of history with nearly 80,000 works from six continents. Today the sprawling campus encompasses three primary buildings—the Caroline Wiess Law, Audrey Jones Beck, and Nancy and Rich Kinder buildings (the latter opened in 2020 following a major redevelopment)—alongside decorative arts house museums, the Glassell studio art school, a sculpture garden, and conservation facilities. By gallery space, it ranks as the ninth-largest museum in the world and the second-largest art museum in the Americas, drawing over 900,000 visitors annually.
