The Athenaeum of Philadelphia, located at 219 S. 6th Street in the Society Hill section of the city, is a membership library and museum founded in 1814 to collect materials connected with American history, antiquities, and the useful arts. Designed by architect John Notman in the Italianate style and constructed of brownstone, the building houses one of the nation's most significant architectural archives, comprising 180,000 drawings, over 350,000 photographs, and manuscript holdings from approximately 1,000 American architects, with particular emphasis on the period from 1800 to 1945. Since 1950, the institution has sponsored the annual Athenaeum Literary Award. Recognized as a National Historic Landmark and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, it remains a vital repository for American architectural and design history.
