Completed in 1891, the Fisher Fine Arts Library served as the University of Pennsylvania's primary library until 1962. Designed by Philadelphia architect Frank Furness, the building exemplifies Venetian Gothic architecture rendered in red sandstone, brick, and terra-cotta. Its fortress-like and cathedral-like qualities combine into a distinctive presence on campus. Now listed on the National Register of Historic Places and designated a National Historic Landmark, it remains one of Furness's most significant works.
