Located at 97 and 103 Orchard Street on Manhattan's Lower East Side, the Lower East Side Tenement Museum preserves two Italianate tenement buildings that housed an estimated 15,000 residents from over 20 nations across nearly a century and a half—from 1863 to 1935 at the first address and 1888 to 2015 at the second. Established as a museum and National Historic Site in 1988, the institution operates as a nonprofit dedicated to exploring and contextualizing the immigrant experience through its historical buildings and visitors' center, promoting tolerance and historical understanding of those who made their homes in these densely populated structures.
