The University Settlement Society of New York, established in 1886 at the corner of Eldridge and Rivington Streets on the Lower East Side, was the first settlement house in the United States. Designed by the architectural firm Howells & Stokes in the Neoclassical style, the building at 184 Eldridge Street has served as a center for educational and social services to immigrants and low-income families since its inception. Now listed on the National Register of Historic Places, it remains a landmark of progressive-era social work and urban community support.
