Toynbee Hall, established in 1884 on Commercial Street in Spitalfields, London, stands as a Grade II listed Gothic building and the founding institution of the worldwide settlement movement. Founded by Henrietta and Samuel Barnett in the economically depressed East End, it was named in memory of Oxford historian Arnold Toynbee, who died the year before. As the first university-affiliated settlement house, Toynbee Hall embodied a reformist social philosophy aimed at bringing the rich and poor into closer, interdependent community life. Today, this charitable institution continues its original mission to address the causes and impacts of poverty across London and beyond, working to bridge social and financial divides.
