Senate House, completed between 1932 and 1937, is the administrative centre of the University of London in Bloomsbury, London, situated immediately north of the British Museum. Designed by architect Charles Holden as the first phase of a larger unrealised scheme, the nineteen-storey Art Deco structure rises 210 feet (64 metres) and became a cultural landmark of the era. During the Second World War, its occupation by the Ministry of Information inspired literary works by Graham Greene (*The Ministry of Fear*, 1943) and George Orwell, whose dystopian *Nineteen Eighty-Four* evokes the building's stark presence. Today it houses the University of London's Central Academic Bodies, the Senate House Library, six research institutes of the School of Advanced Study, and the offices of the university's vice-chancellor. The building is designated Grade II* listed.
