The Minneapolis Institute of Art, founded in 1883, is one of the largest art museums in the United States, holding more than 100,000 works spanning 5,000 years of world history across six continents. Designed by the prominent architectural firm McKim, Mead & White, with later additions by Michael Graves and Kenzō Tange, the museum organizes its permanent collection into five curatorial areas: Arts of Global Africa, Global Contemporary Art, Asian Art, European Art, and Arts of the Americas. Welcoming more than half a million visitors annually, the institution distinguishes itself through a free general admission policy and extensive public engagement, including its Art Adventure program for elementary schoolchildren, classes, and interactive media offerings that reach an additional hundred thousand people each year.
