The Art Institute of Chicago is a private, nonprofit art museum founded in 1879 and located in Grant Park. One of the oldest and largest art museums in the United States, it houses a permanent collection of nearly 300,000 works of art, including masterpieces such as Georges Seurat's *A Sunday on La Grande Jatte*, Pablo Picasso's *The Old Guitarist*, Edward Hopper's *Nighthawks*, and Grant Wood's *American Gothic*. The original building was constructed for the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition. Renzo Piano designed the Modern Wing, a major expansion that opened in 2009 and brought the museum's total footprint to nearly one million square feet, making it the second largest art museum in the country. The institution operates as a research center with conservation laboratories and houses one of the nation's largest art history and architecture libraries, the Ryerson and Burnham Libraries. The School of the Art Institute of Chicago is legally integrated with the museum, preserving a rare unified arts institution model.
