Located in Chicago's Grant Park opposite Adams Street, the Art Institute of Chicago building is a Beaux-Arts structure whose core opened to the public on December 8, 1893, as the World's Congress Auxiliary Building for the World's Columbian Exposition. Designed by the architectural firm Shepley, Rutan and Coolidge, the main building was later renamed the Allerton Building in 1968. Over more than a century, the museum expanded across the site, building over the former Illinois Central railroad line and further into the park. The most recent and significant addition is the Modern Wing, funded in part by Pat Ryan, which opened on May 16, 2009, and increased the gallery space by 33 percent while adding new educational facilities. The complex, which marks the Art Institute's third location, forms part of the Chicago Landmark Historic Michigan Boulevard District.
