Located in Chicago's Englewood neighborhood, the Yale Apartments is a seven-story Romanesque Revival building designed by architect John T. Long and completed in 1892. Built to house visitors to the World's Columbian Exposition, it represents an important "first generation" residential high-rise made possible by advances in building structure and technology during the 1890s real estate boom. The building exhibits the monumental style popularized by Henry H. Richardson, with notable craftsmanship in its materials and detailing. Its most distinctive feature is a rare interior atrium ringed with galleries and crowned by a glass-and-metal skylight. Originally constructed as luxury apartments, the building was gutted and converted to smaller units in the late 1930s and early 1940s, then extensively renovated in 2003 to provide 69 apartments for low-income senior citizens. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1998 and designated a Chicago Landmark in 2003, it has gained recognition as one of Chicago's "best-kept secrets."
