Completed in 1889 at the northwest corner of South Michigan Avenue and Ida B. Wells Drive in Chicago's Loop, the Auditorium Building is a landmark work by the architectural partnership of Dankmar Adler and Louis Sullivan. Designed as an ambitious multi-use complex integrating offices, a hotel, and a theater, the building exemplifies the Stile Liberty aesthetic. The Auditorium Theatre within housed the inaugural performances of both the Chicago Civic Opera and Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Frank Lloyd Wright, then a young apprentice, contributed to the interior design. Recognized as a National Historic Landmark in 1975 and a Chicago Landmark in 1976, the building has served as home to Roosevelt University since 1947.
