St. Michael's Hospital in Toronto is a teaching hospital established in 1892 by the Sisters of St. Joseph to serve the city's sick and poor. Built in the Art Deco style, the institution has evolved into a major medical centre providing tertiary and quaternary care, particularly in cardiovascular surgery, neurosurgery, inner city health, and therapeutic endoscopy. As one of two Level 1 adult trauma centres in Greater Toronto, it maintains a helipad for emergency transport. Affiliated with the University of Toronto and part of Unity Health Toronto, St. Michael's plays a significant role in the Toronto Academic Health Science Network.
