Standing on Paul Kruger Street in Pretoria, the Pretoria Great Synagogue is a Moorish Revival structure consecrated in 1898 for the Pretoria Hebrew Congregation. The Orthodox Jewish congregation occupied the building until 1952, when they relocated to a larger site. The apartheid government subsequently expropriated the structure, which served as a Special Annex of the Supreme Court of South Africa from 1956 to 1977—a period during which it hosted the trials of Nelson Mandela and the inquest into Steve Biko's death. Now designated a Grade II Provincial Heritage Resource under the National Heritage Resources Act and managed by the Department of Public Works and Infrastructure, the building stands as a tangible record of South Africa's complex social and legal history.
