The Prison of Anemas is a large Byzantine structure attached to the defensive walls of Constantinople, now Istanbul. Traditionally identified with the prisons of Michael Anemas, a Byzantine general who led an unsuccessful revolt against Emperor Alexios I Komnenos (r. 1081–1118) and became its first known inmate, the fortress prison played a significant role in the empire's final centuries, housing four Byzantine emperors during periods of political turmoil.
