The Monastery of Komnenion is an Eastern Orthodox monastery near Stomio in Larissa, Greece, with roots in Byzantine tradition. According to legend, it was founded under Justinian I (r. 527–565), but was substantially rebuilt in its present form by Emperor Alexios I Komnenos (r. 1081–1118). The main church, or katholikon, dates primarily to the 16th century, though it incorporates elements from a 14th-century predecessor; its exterior walls are studded with ancient and Byzantine spolia. Interior frescoes survive from 1758. A devastating fire in 1868 left the katholikon in ruins for over a century until its restoration in the early 2000s through funding from the European Union and the 7th Ephorate of Byzantine Antiquities. Archaeological excavations have uncovered traces of the original Komnenian-era structure beneath the current building. The site now functions as the Monastery of the Dormition of the Theotokos and of Saint Demetrios and is recognized as an archaeological site in Greece.
