The Puerta del Sol (Sun Gate) is a city gate in Toledo, Spain, constructed by the Knights Hospitaller between the late 13th and early 14th centuries. A masterwork of Mudéjar military architecture, it synthesizes Romanesque and Islamic design elements, featuring horseshoe and blind multifoil arches that are so distinctly Islamic in character that scholars long attributed it to pre-conquest construction. Above the gate's arch sits a medallion depicting the ordination of Saint Ildephonsus, Toledo's patron, receiving his cassock beneath sun and moon imagery—references that inspire both the gate's name and its eastern orientation toward the rising sun. Though substantially altered from its original form, the entrance and its impressive Moorish architectural vocabulary remain a celebrated monument and a bien de interés cultural.
