The Quba Mosque in Medina, Saudi Arabia, is revered as the first mosque in the world, established in 622 CE on the day of the Prophet Muhammad's emigration to the city. According to tradition, Muhammad himself laid its first stone, with his companions completing the structure. The original building was extensively modified over the centuries until the 1980s, when it was entirely replaced by a modern structure designed by architect Abdel-Wahed El-Wakil, which stands today as a contemporary expression of Islamic architecture.
