The R. H. Stearns Building at 140 Tremont Street in Boston is an 11-story Beaux-Arts structure built in 1909, combining ground-floor retail shops with residential quarters above. Commissioned by businessman R. H. Stearns for his eponymous department store company, which had occupied various Boston locations since the 1880s, the building replaced a remodeled former Masonic Temple site. The R. H. Stearns and Company department store operated from this flagship location until the company's closure in 1978. The building was subsequently converted into approximately 140 studio and one-bedroom apartments serving older adults and people with disabilities. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1980.
