Race Rocks Light, situated on islets off the southern tip of Vancouver Island near Victoria, British Columbia, is one of the first two lighthouses built on Canada's west coast. Constructed in 1859 and illuminated in 1860 with British Government financing, it stands 24.4 metres tall and is the only lighthouse on the coast built entirely of rock—granite quarried in Scotland and topped with sandstone from Gabriola Island. Recognized as a federal heritage building of Canada, it represents a distinctive engineering achievement of the early colonial period.
