Fisgard Lighthouse, on Fisgard Island at the mouth of Esquimalt Harbour in Colwood, British Columbia, was the first lighthouse on Canada's west coast. Built in 1859–60 by the British colonial government of the Colony of Vancouver Island, the white brick tower stands 14.6 metres tall and first shone its light on 16 November 1860. Originally staffed by twelve full-time keepers, it was automated in 1929 and has operated continuously except for a year following a 1957 fire. The light displays a white isophase beam across designated sectors and red shutters in other directions. Formally designated a National Historic Site of Canada in 1958, the lighthouse is now jointly administered with Fort Rodd Hill National Historic Site via an artificial causeway constructed in the 1950s.
