Built in 1889 in Syracuse, the Ranke Library is a Romanesque Revival structure designed by architect Archimedes Russell in brick and terracotta. The building was constructed to house the renowned collection of Leopold von Ranke—over 21,000 items spanning primary source materials on Western history—which Syracuse University Library had acquired in 1887, outbidding the Prussian government. The purchase of Ranke's collection, described as "the finest collection of primary source materials ever assembled by one man for the study of western history," dramatically enlarged the university library and elevated it to the third largest in New York State. The building remains a contributing property to the National Register of Historic Places.
