Ratnaya Palata, or the Martial Chamber, stands in Pushkin near Saint Petersburg as Russia's World War I museum. Designed by Siemion Sidorczuk in Russian Revival style to commemorate the Romanov dynasty's 300th anniversary, it was conceived as a museum of Russian war history based on Elena Tretyakova's collection. When construction was completed during the war itself, Emperor Nicholas II redirected its focus to contemporary Russian military heroism. The museum opened briefly before the Russian Empire's collapse in 1917 and closed within a year under Soviet rule. After decades of alternative uses, the building was transferred to the Tsarskoye Selo Museum complex in 2008, restored, and reopened in August 2014 as modern Russia's first World War I museum, now housing the exhibition "Russia in the Great War." The structure remains a federal cultural heritage site.
