Built in 1885 on the east shore of Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, Redwood Cottage is a substantial Queen Anne mansion commissioned by Emily Baker, widow of the wealthy railroad promoter Robert Hall Baker. Originally designed as a summer retreat for the Baker family, this 17,000-square-foot, thirty-room frame structure takes its name from the redwood trim used throughout its interior doors and windows. The two-story mansion with attic showcases hallmark Queen Anne details: a complex roofline featuring gabled dormers, a round corner tower crowned with a witch's cap roof, decorative wood shingle patterns, bay windows, and a broad veranda wrapping the first story. The interior plan centers on a grand corridor with rooms flanking either side, anchored by an elegant staircase lit by multicolored stained glass and warmed by twelve fireplaces with Victorian Renaissance mantels. After its initial service as a summer cottage, the building was later converted to a sanitarium and then a hotel before being listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984.
