The Rijksmuseum is the national museum of the Netherlands, located at Museum Square in Amsterdam South alongside the Van Gogh Museum and Stedelijk Museum. Founded in The Hague in 1798 and relocated to Amsterdam in 1808, the institution eventually moved to its current main building, designed by architect Pierre Cuypers and opened in 1885. After a decade-long renovation costing €375 million, the museum reopened in 2013 under Queen Beatrix. As the largest art museum in the country, it houses 8,000 displayed objects drawn from a collection of one million works spanning 1200 to 2000, including masterpieces by Rembrandt, Frans Hals, and Vermeer, as well as a small Asian collection displayed in a dedicated pavilion. The museum attracted record visitor numbers in 2013 and 2014, with 2.47 million visitors in the latter year.
