Roman temple 1 at insula XII, St Albans
St Albans, United Kingdom

No longer standing
Demolished or destroyed.
A classical Roman temple excavated in the southwestern corner of Verulamium's forum at St Albans, this stone structure is distinguished by its unusual termination in a solid apse rather than the more conventional open plan. Built during the Roman occupation of Britain, the temple represents an important example of provincial Roman religious architecture adapted to local requirements. The site is now an archaeological zone where the remains provide evidence of religious practice and urban planning in the Romano-British settlement.
