Roman temple at Adelaide Place, Canterbury
Canterbury, United Kingdom

Demolished or destroyed.
A substantial Roman temple once stood in Canterbury's sacred precinct, its principal sanctuary marked by a massive mortared flint podium—the surviving structural evidence of the city's most important religious building during the Roman occupation of Britain. Built from stone and later demolished, this temple exemplified Roman architectural practice in its use of a raised platform to elevate the shrine above the surrounding precinct, a design convention that lent monumental authority to the sacred space.
