Built in 1893 by the Portland Cottage Building Association, the Roome–Stearns House stands in Portland's Irvington neighborhood as the finest remaining example of a modest, cottage-scaled Queen Anne dwelling. The structure exemplifies elegant Eastlake detailing in its interior finish, and its exceptional state of preservation distinguishes it among the association's several cottage developments in the area. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1992, the house documents the aesthetic ambitions of a short-lived building company that left a lasting mark on west Irvington's residential character.
