Rose Hill Plantation House, a Carpenter Gothic residence located on US 278 in Bluffton, Beaufort County, South Carolina, was begun in 1858 for Dr. John Kirk and his wife Caroline but remained unfinished when the Civil War interrupted construction. Work resumed after World War II under architect Willis Irvin, who completed the house for its new owners, John and Florence Sturgeon. According to local tradition, the house was spared destruction by Union forces during the war when a soldier deemed it "too beautiful to be burned." Added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1983, the house preserves the antebellum character of a wealthy planter's home from the pre-Civil War era.
