Located in Aiken, South Carolina, the Phelps House, also known as Rose Hill Estate, was built in the early 1900s atop the foundations of an antebellum structure destroyed during the Civil War. Designed in the Shingle Style—a mode favored for late-nineteenth and early-twentieth-century resort homes of the wealthy but rarely employed in South Carolina—the expansive residence comprises more than twenty rooms and is accompanied by extensive outbuildings including stables, a garage, greenhouses, and kennels. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974, the property now operates as a public venue offering overnight accommodations, event facilities, catering services, and The Stables Restaurant.
