Built between 1895 and 1898 in the village of San Stefano (now Yeşilköy, Istanbul), the Russian Monument was a Russian Revival mausoleum and chapel erected by the Russian Empire to commemorate soldiers who fell in the Russo-Turkish War of 1877–1878. The structure served as both a memorial and place of Orthodox worship. In 1914, as the Ottoman Empire entered World War I and declared jihad against Russia, Ismail Enver Pasha ordered its demolition—an event memorably documented by filmmaker Fuat Uzkınay in what became the oldest known Turkish-made film.
