Built in 1561 by the renowned Ottoman architect Mimar Sinan for Grand Vizier Rüstem Pasha, this caravanserai stands in Edirne in northwestern Turkey as a masterwork of Ottoman architecture. The two-storey rectangular structure centers on a courtyard and includes a hammam; twenty-one shops occupy its front section. Historically, the commercial courtyard functioned as a marketplace for silk moths bred throughout the Edirne region. The Russo-Turkish War (1877–1878) destroyed the original well area and prayer room. Following a 1972 restoration led by architect Ertan Cakirlar—an early recipient of the Aga Khan Award for Architecture—the caravanserai was converted into a hotel. Its interior was further remodelled in 2016–18, and today it operates as a 110-room establishment.
