Saint Gayane Church is a 7th-century Armenian church in Vagharshapat, Armenia's religious center, built by Catholicos Ezra I in 630 on a site sacred to the memory of Saint Gayane, an abbess martyred in 301. Constructed in the distinctive Armenian architectural tradition, the church preserves the design principles of early medieval Armenian ecclesiastical building despite partial renovations to its dome and ceilings undertaken in 1652. Its exceptional state of preservation makes it one of the finest surviving examples of Armenian church architecture from this formative period. Located within walking distance of the Etchmiadzin Cathedral, Saint Gayane Church was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000 as part of the historical churches of Vagharshapat, and remains an important Armenian cultural heritage monument.
