Saltram House is a Grade I listed Georgian country house in Plympton, Devon, designed by Robert Adam, who substantially altered and expanded an earlier Tudor structure on two occasions. Built commencing in the mid-eighteenth century by John Parker and his wife Catherine Poulett, and completed by their son John Parker, 1st Baron Boringdon, the house is considered by architectural critic Nikolaus Pevsner to be "the most impressive country house in Devon." One of Britain's finest preserved early Georgian residences, Saltram retains much of its original décor, plasterwork, and furnishings, with the Saloon regarded as one of Adam's outstanding interior designs. The house contains the Parker family's extensive painting collection, notably works by Sir Joshua Reynolds, the prominent eighteenth-century artist who was born at Plympton and maintained a friendship with the family. Transferred to the National Trust in 1957, the estate is now open to the public.
