The Sambadrome Marquês de Sapucaí is a purpose-built parade venue in the Cidade Nova district of downtown Rio de Janeiro, designed by Oscar Niemeyer and completed after Brazil's military dictatorship ended in 1985. Known also as Passarela Professor Darcy Ribeiro, it serves as the competitive stage for samba school parades during Rio Carnival, drawing thousands of Brazilian and international spectators annually. Beyond its role as the iconic heart of Carnival, the structure functions as a versatile performance space. Niemeyer's design represents a significant return to major architectural practice following the country's transition to democracy, and the venue is now recognized as a heritage asset by Brazil's principal preservation bodies.
