On The Embarcadero in San Francisco, the Ferry Building stands as a monumental Beaux-Arts terminal completed in 1898 to A. Page Brown's design. Originally the city's largest civic project at its opening, the building features a commanding 245-foot-tall clock tower crowned with four 22-foot clock dials visible from Market Street—possibly inspired by Seville's Giralda bell tower. The structure's entire length is defined by elegant arched arcades. After mid-century decline prompted the construction of transbay bridges, the building was adapted for offices until a comprehensive 2002 restoration revived its public purpose. The restored 660-foot Great Nave now houses a marketplace on its ground floor, while offices occupy the upper stories. The clock bell chimes Westminster Quarters on the hour, and the terminal remains a San Francisco landmark listed on the National Register of Historic Places, serving Golden Gate Ferry and San Francisco Bay Ferry routes.
