Sanctuary Wood Cemetery is a Commonwealth War Graves Commission cemetery located 5 kilometres east of Ypres, Belgium, near Hooge in the municipality of Zillebeke, designed by Noel Ackroyd Rew and Edwin Lutyens. The cemetery preserves 637 identified graves, primarily from the First World War battles around Ypres in 1914 and the Allied offensive of late 1917. Three small cemeteries were originally established in Sanctuary Wood between May and August 1915, but were largely destroyed during the Battle of Mount Sorrel in June 1916; after the war, one cemetery containing 137 graves was recovered and formed the nucleus of the present site, which was substantially expanded between 1927 and 1932 with burials brought in from surrounding areas. The cemetery contains the grave of Lieutenant Gilbert Talbot of the Rifle Brigade, in whose memory Talbot House was established at Poperinghe in December 1915. Just outside the cemetery stands a Celtic cross memorial to Second Lieutenant Thomas Keith Hedley Rae, erected in 1921 and relocated to its present location in the 1960s.
