Santa Maria di Portosalvo, a former Roman Catholic church in Naples, stands on via Alcide De Gasperi near the harbour, outside the city's walls. Founded in 1554 by the sailor Bernardino Belladonna—who had survived a shipwreck and sought to establish a lay congregation of sailors and shipowners—the chapel was built on a narrow peninsula outside Porta di Massa between 1554 and 1564. The interior was decorated between 1564 and 1565 at considerable expense, featuring a spiral staircase in the choir constructed by a master craftsman named Battista. Though the building displays Rococo characteristics, it remains a modest testament to maritime devotion in Renaissance Naples.
