Located on the Newcomb Pier adjacent to the Santa Monica Pier, the Santa Monica Looff Hippodrome is a Byzantine and Moorish Revival structure designed and built in 1916 by carousel maker Charles I. D. Looff and his son Arthur to house a Looff Carousel. Originally sheltering the Looff carousel until its 1939 sale, the building was subsequently fitted with a Philadelphia Toboggan Company carousel relocated from Ocean Park Pier. A rare surviving example of amusement pier architecture, the Hippodrome gained further cultural resonance when it served as a filming location for the 1973 film *The Sting*. Acquired by the city in 1977 and restored through 1981, it was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1987.
