Seagate is an 11,000-square-foot Mediterranean Revival mansion built in 1929 on 45 acres along Sarasota Bay in Manatee County, Florida, as the winter estate of industrialist Powel Crosley Jr. Designed by New York architect George Albree Freeman Jr. and drafted by Tampa architect Ivo A. de Minicis, the two-and-a-half-story cast-stone-and-stucco home was completed by Sarasota contractor Paul W. Bergmann in just 135 days. The estate later served as a training facility for Army Air Corps airmen during World War War II before being sold in 1947. After subsequent ownership changes and a failed condominium development scheme in the 1980s, the home was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1983. Manatee County acquired the residence and 16.5 acres in 1991, while the State of Florida purchased the remaining 28.4 acres for future University of South Florida expansion. Today the mansion operates as an event rental property.
