Designed by Le Corbusier and completed in 1953, the Secretariat Building in Chandigarh is a modernist structure of brutalist character that originally housed the offices of the Chief Secretary of East Punjab. Following the Punjab Reorganisation Act of 1966, which divided the state into Haryana and Punjab, Chandigarh became the capital of both states, and the building now serves both Chief Secretaries. Part of the larger Chandigarh Capitol Complex—comprising three buildings and three monuments—it was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in July 2016 as one of seventeen sites recognized under "The Architectural Work of Le Corbusier."
